This 18th century opera is set within a forest, where a peaceful community of nymphs are forced underground where they sing "Harmless, merry, free and GAY". Galatea, has fallen in love with Acis, and their female romance seems to enchant the world. However, the peaceful harmony is soon disrupted by the cyclops Polyphemus, who yearns for Galatea. Upon rejection, he kills Acis and in mourning, Galatea and her community immortalize Acis by transforming him into a natural memorial.
