With over 30 years of experience in small business, non-profit leadership, and political engagement, John has dedicated his career to strengthening Vancouver’s community through entrepreneurial ventures and service. He began his journey by co-founding and operating a series of service-based businesses from 1995 to 2016. He then transitioned into operating independently, opening and managing several businesses including Reno Me BC, Vancouver Suntan & Wellness Centre, Banana Tans, and Davie Village Tanning through 2025. In spring 2025, John took over as a marina operator in Richmond, managing the business, property, and staff. These businesses are recognized for their commitment to exceptional practices and community support, with John overseeing projects from conception through successful execution.
John is known for his project management skills, strategic thinking, and ability to create and execute compelling visions. He thrives in collaborative environments, building strong teams and leading initiatives across large, complex organizations. His approach combines analytical acumen with pragmatic operational strategies—anticipating challenges and driving results.
Volunteering is central to John’s goals and aspirations. He has served as Vice-President (2001–2006) and President (2007–2010) of the Vancouver Pride Society, and as a BIA member, President, and Chair of the Mount Pleasant Business Improvement Association (1998–2016). In these roles, he championed downtown revitalization and community engagement. John’s advocacy also includes board memberships with Fierté Canada Pride, InterPride, and GLISA North America, where he chaired the 2011 GLISA North America Outgames, promoting human rights, diversity, and inclusion at national and international levels. Over the last seven years, John has continued to explore the unapologetically queer potential of the community through a variety of sporting, cultural, and human rights initiatives. He serves on the Abbeyfield Houses of Vancouver Society Board of Directors and the Living With Pride Foundation as a director. John returned to Vancouver Pride in summer 2025, helping execute the 2025 Pride events.
John is passionate about fostering the next generation of leaders. He mentored aspiring entrepreneurs through the Canadian Youth Business Foundation (2009–2015) and remains committed to ongoing personal and community growth. He looks forward to contributing his experience and passion in mentorship roles that support local business and community initiatives.
John continues to seek opportunities to support and mentor emerging leaders, believing in the power of collaboration, inclusion, and effective leadership to drive positive change in the community.
